We kick off our drinks series with five gorgeous cold climate
cocktails that will get you all fired up!
With Autumn upon us and Winter knocking on the door, we asked our top bar professionals to give us the lowdown on how to warm up. Forget open fires, cosy chairs and comfy slippers, these cocktails will heat you up from the inside out. In the first story of this series, our awesome master barman Robert Harrell gives us his recommendations.
Robert grew up in Boston in the USA. With an average mid winter temperature of -5 degrees Celsius, it’s no surprise that he knows a thing or two about how to mix a cocktail that will blow the frost off the weariest traveller. Working in freezing conditions, he had the chance to hone his skills and experiment with scrumptious ingredients.
It was all about braving the elements and trudging through the winter snow just to go out and enjoy cocktails worthy of the trip, ” he told us, “most of these cocktails would tend to be Whiskey based as they would help with minimising the cold on the way back home.
Robert’s cool climate cocktail faves are a mixture of the traditional and modern. He told us that after moving from Boston to sunny California he adapted his taste to include cocktails that not only keep you warm on cold nights but are also pleasing to the eye.
While Robert doesn’t take credit for creating these beautiful cocktails (“credit goes to some very talented bartenders both here in Sydney and back in the States”), he has certainly made a few of them in his time behind the bar and consumed a few along the way too, as a patron at many fine establishments.
We hope you enjoy Robert’s tips and get the chance to sample a few yourself over the cooler months:
1. The Classic Old Fashioned (pictured above)
60ml Maker’s Mark Bourbon
1 teaspoon of sugar
3-4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
2 cocktail spoons of Cherry Maraschino syrup
Stir bitters, sugar & maraschino syrup in Old Fashioned glass,
Add 2-3 large ice cubes
Add Maker Mark 20ml at a time & keep stirring adding more spirit until finished
Garnish (w) Orange zest & a maraschino cherry (optional)
2. Sloe Rose Negroni
25ml Lillet Rose
12.5ml Bombay Sapphire
12.5 Hayman’s Gin
Build in a Rocks glass over ice
3. Fireball Apple Cider
60ml Fireball Whiskey
120ml Apple Cider
3 Apple wedges
5ml Maraschino Cherry syrup to float on top
Garnish with a Maraschino Cherry
4. Blood Orange Daquiri (pictured top)
45ml Havana Especial Rum
30ml Blood Orange juice
15ml Fresh Lime juice
15ml Dark Sugar syrup
Shaken (w) ice & strained into a cocktail / martini glass
Garnish with 1/2 slice of Blood Orange
5. Dark & Stormy
60ml of Goslings Black Seal Rum
120ml of Ginger Beer
Squeeze in one lime wedge
Garnish with a lime wedge
